ALDA Facts
of Interest:
- The Alabama Dental Association was founded in 1869.
- The Alabama Dental Association was the first state dental association
to establish a Dental Practice Act.
- The object of the Alabama Dental Association is to encourage the
improvement of the health of the public, to promote the art and science
of dentistry and to represent the interests of the members of the
dental profession and the public for which it serves.
- The Alabama Dental Association has more than 1,600 members in nine
local District Dental Societies and one dental school.
- The Alabama Dental Association represents more than 80 percent of
Alabama dentists.
- The American Dental Association (ADA) represents members of the
Alabama Dental Association on a national level. The Alabama Dental
Association is a constituent (state) society of the American Dental
Association. All ALDA members are also members of the ADA as well
as their local District Dental Society.
- The dental school located in Alabama is known as the University
of Alabama School of Dentistry and is located in Birmingham, Alabama.
- The Alabama Dental Association helps coordinate several programs
that serve the disabled and elderly.
- More than eighty percent of dentists in the United States are in
general practice. The following specialists represent the remainder:
- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon:
The oral surgeon provides diagnostic, operative and related services
dealing with disease, injuries and defects in the mouth, jaw and face
through surgical extraction or reconstruction.
- Orthodontist:
The orthodontist treats problems related to irregular dental development,
missing teeth and other developmental abnormalities in order to establish
normal function and appearance of the teeth and jaws. "Braces" are
often used in orthodontic treatment.
- Pediatric Dentist:
The pediatric dentist (pedodontist) offers comprehensive dental treatment
to children, adolescents and young adults whose dental development
is not complete.
- Periodontist:
The periodontist provides diagnosis and treatment of diseases that
can seriously damage the gums, bone and other tissues that surround
and support the teeth.
- Prosthodontist:
The prosthodontist constructs artificial appliances designed to restore
and maintain oral function by replacing missing teeth and other oral
structures.
- Endodontist:
The endodontist deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment
of disease and injuries of the pulp, which is the internal soft tissue
of the tooth. While they offer other types of treatment, endodontists
are most commonly associated with root canal procedures.
- Oral Pathologist:
The oral pathologist deals with the identification and management
of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial structures. These
diseases are diagnosed through the use of clinical, radiographic,
microscopic and biochemical examinations.
